Vaccination which can also be called immunization, is a safe health process of administration drugs for the *prevention* of diseases. It is another safe way to ensuring you don't get severely sick or sick from an infection. Vaccination is usually used for diseases which can easily cause death and spread widely. You have probably been vaccinated before as a child. Check your upper arm! You might just see a circular scar.

Vaccines are biological substances, they are produced from tiny living things and help you fight infection. Vaccines are created using a small part or whole of the micro-organisms ( harmless form) to send a message to the defence system of the body on how to fight a particular disease. It like sending a letter to the army about the enemy before they arrive to your boarder.

When someone is given a vaccine or falls ill from an infection and the person doesn't fall sick again even when exposed to the same bacteria, the person is said to be immunized. Immunization means that your body can fight off an infection because without making you fall ill.

Vaccine is a wonderful health breakthrough because it has prevented people from dying or spending too a lot money in treatment.

Vaccines are always tested and ensured safe before being made available to the general public. Vaccines can also be given as drops in the mouth or as injection.

COVID-19 Vaccines

COVID-19 is a novel virus that affect majorly the respiratory (breathing) system. They are similar to Sever Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome and share symptoms with our common cold.

COVID-19 vaccine was developed when the Covid Virus became a world wide health emergency spreading rapidly across the globe. Medical scientist and other stakeholders realized the need to curb the spread to prevent mutation of more severe strain of the virus.

Covid 19 vaccine was carefully and urgently developed leveraging on existing knowledge of the virus and general principles of creating vaccine. It was developed following standard protocol on safety and efficacy and its still currently undergoing upgrade to tackle new Corona virus strain.

There are a number of Covid vaccine which are around the globe, all of which a complete dose confers 80-90% immunity against developing severe illness from the virus. The popular ones are:

Planning on take the Covid vaccine in Nigeria?

Here is what you should do

  • If you have any underlying condition or routine drugs please inform your doctor before taking the vaccine
  • Make sure to disclose this information when registering to get the vaccine
  • Ask the health personnel any question you have about the vaccine even if you think is silly. The more you know the less doubt you have about the vaccine
  • In Nigeria, AstraZeneca vaccine is what is available and certified by the government so be careful not to fall to fraudster
  • The AstraZeneca vaccine dose comes in a 5ml bottle. Each bottle will be administered to 10 people at 0.5mls per dose ( ask the nurse/doctor to show you the syringe just to be sure)
  • You will have to take the dose two times to have 90% immunity against the virus
  • Vaccine is not for sale in Nigeria. Please do not pay for it
  • Lastly, ensure to still use your facemask, maintain all non physical contact and wash your hands regularly.
